Aaron Copland’s ballet suite from Rodeo opens this concert of American music. He uses traditional folk tunes to capture the frontier spirit, concluding with the famous Hoe-Down. Jill Rose returns to the Saffron Hall to play George Gershwin’s jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in F. From ragtime to blues and even a cakewalk, this is a piece full of colour and drama. Philip Glass’ rarely performed 4th Symphony, ‘Heroes’, is based on the music of David Bowie and Brian Eno. Glass uses the source material in very subtle ways to create a six-movement work of great interest and contrast.
