Sam Lee has a unique role in the British music scene. He's an acclaimed award-winning singer, shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize, a folksong collector and conservationist. His critically-acclaimed album Old Wow won most of the prizes going last year, and will be issued in a deluxe edition titled Old Wow+ to coincide with this concert. Penguin Random House recently published his richly inspiring book The Nightingale: Notes On A Songbird. Sam is closely linked to Extinction Rebellion and is a founder member of Music Declares Emergency.
For this Future Folk concert, Sam has invited Alice Zawadzki to join him on the bill, and then guest with his group. Alice often gets pigeonholed as a jazz singer: like Sam, she defies easy categories.
Violinist, songwriter, composer, vocalist and improviser Alice Zawadzki draws together influences from her early exposure to New Orleans soul and gospel, a classical training and an exploration of world and improvised music. She is joined by the brilliant bass player Misha Mullov-Abbado, also a member of Sam’s band, and her band.
"Old Wow is a dazzling fusion of nature and song, Sam Lee's rich baritone voice carries the imprint of folk past. It's a daring piece of chamber folk" - The Observer, reviewing Sam Lee's new album
‘With her glacial, folksy vocals and puckish fiddle, Alice Zawadzki would be notable enough. Add her compositional range and whimsical hyper-creativity and she becomes something of a phenomenon.’ - MOJO Magazine
