Britten Sinfonia returns to its Saffron Hall home in the company of two members of its extended artistic family, Sir Mark Elder and Michael Mofidian. This one-hour concert explores late Romantic love, life and loss from Vienna to Bavaria.
At the heart of the programme is Mahler’s powerfully emotive song cycle Kindertotenlieder, a study in anguish, grief and the power of love to transcend. Wagner’s love letter and birthday present to his wife Cosima, the Siegfried Idyll, opens the concert; first performed by a small ensemble who woke her by performing it outside their house on Christmas Day 1870. And the programme concludes with a trip to the sparkling, champagne-soaked ballrooms of 19th century Vienna: an arrangement for small ensemble of the overture to Johann Strauss’s most famous operetta Die Fledermaus.
